What you see is what you hit?

As I said in the original blogs comments section…
Our club hosted this years Dutch National Championship 3D, I also shot at last years. The NHB (Nederlands Handboog Bond – Dutch Archery Association)) allow binoculars but they have to be checked by a NHB referee that they are not range finders. It was mostly compound shooters that used them, and watching them check the target once or twice, take the shot, then check the shot with binos started narking my instinctive archery , bowhunter recurve mind hahaha 🙂 I got impatient watching them, when I wasn’t even shooting myself.

My Archery Experiences

In the NFAS archers are not allowed to use any spotting scopes or binoculars before or after they have shot. Some classes are allowed sights on their bows but no binoculars or spotting scopes.
In the upcoming AGM this is going to be discussed as there is a proposal for sighted classes to be allowed to use binos but lose the option of target cards (small book showing target faces which they allowed to review prior to shooting).
The topic is being hotly debated in club houses, forums and on the Facebook site by some so I thought it worth putting a few views across and invite readers thoughts.

Firstly some brief history

To my knowledge binoculars have never been allowed as an aid to the archer. Marshalls have used them when assisting on a course but not the archers.
A few years ago there had…

#DrMattTaylor #Rosetta #10KLikesForDrTaylor

Long time no post, but hey…

Today is a day of support for Dr Matt Taylor who landed a robot on a comet, but gets pilloried by feminists for the choice of shirt he wore.
Meanwhile Kim Kardasian gets her backside out on the interweb.

By wearing a silly shirt today I’m showing my support.

The Straw that broke democracy’s back

Scottish Independence 2014 Blog

I’ve given in and subscribed to The Times for a month (just the one!), purely to access this piece: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/opinion/columnists/article4212654.ece

Here it is in full, with my comments after.

Let’s preserve our Union in law to stop the SNP pulling it apart
by Jack Straw

Now that Scotland has decisively spoken, after a campaign whose terms were set by the SNP for itself, we should follow the example of stable federated countries (the US and India, for example) and say: “This Union is now indissoluble.”

If independence would have been for good, so must the decision to stay. You can’t pull a living plant up by the roots again and again, and expect it to survive. Put this commitment to the Union in primary Westminster legislation. Of course, that could be changed but only by all the UK’s MPs. “Better Together” must mean what it says.

Excuse me while I take a #stemfie – #ep2014

image

Me making a crucial decision.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this one here > Apathy in NL… Oh! Selfies! taking a selfie, or a #stemfie in a Dutch polling booth isn’t illegal. The word stemfie comes from the Dutch word to vote, stemmen, and selfie, and it seems to be a ploy to get young people out to vote, because face it. Here in NL voter turn out will be a low one.

image

Security is tight at the Dutch polling stations.

As you can see from the photies we are spoiled for choice. We get to choose one candidate from 345 standing in 19 parties.

Not all the people on the list are actually standing for election. Some are just on the list to show their support for that particular party and are placed at the bottom of the list where they have no chance of being elected. Which makes it very tempting to vote for them.

Spoiled for choice, that's not the full ballot paper...

Which party did I vote for?

Tsk, it’s a secret ballot!

Just saying I voted for a social liberal party in a tactical vote against a Redneck party.

British Pathé Tuesday

Brilliantness, simply brilliantness. A great find.

The Infinite Curve - an archery blog

It’s British Pathé Tuesday, and time for some Cholmondley Warner-style bowmaking, fletching and archery from 1961 in glorious Technicolor, fetching outfits, and staggeringly RP accents. Enjoy.

Slowly, But Surely…

It’s getting there.

Balcony Garden is taking shape. The peas I’m growing from a box of dried peas I bought in the supermarket are doing well. The tomato plants I’m growing from seed are looking promising for later in the year. Cheated and bought a red pepper plant, a round courgette plant and strawberry plants.

Also some suprises creeping up. There are still some beef tomatoes, coming up from a fallen fruit that fell last year and I didn’t bother to clear away, prefering to let it compost into the dirt. They have become part of my Guerrilla Gardening projecr oot n aboot The Village. Also red lettuce clones are cropping up from a plant I let go to seed a couple of years ago. Yep two years ago and I’m still getting several red lettuce plants from one or two that I planted. Some I’m keeping, the rest also part of the Guerrilla Gardening projet. Coffee filters are ideal for that.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the red pepper and aubergines I’m growing from seed. Trouble is I forgot to label them. Only now I’m starting to see which is which. Also the garlic I’m growing from a couple of leftover cloves are getting there.

Herbs wise, the chives, thyme, sage, parsely and rosemary all survived the winter and are making a fine comeback. Upstairs in the Bedroom Nursery basil and marjoram are doing well and can go outside soon

I should get a few decent dinners out of this.

Apathy in NL… Oh! Selfies!

Ach, blog ideas, just like buses. You wait a while for one to come up then two arrive at the same time.

Was having a gander through one of my favourite online media outlets, that’ll be a news site or blog then, when I came across these two.

First up, this.
Just 20% of Dutch Voters are Interested in EU Elections.
Just 20% eh? That does worry me. Now I am pro EU but even I can see that they can be they’re own worst enemy at times. An organisation that could be slimmed down. Do they really need buildings in Brussels and Strasbourg? Must there be so many rules and regulations? Sometimes I feel it’s full of Civil Servants, in offices, coming up with random ideas just to justify their jobs and expences.
But for all their faults I would rather have the EU than not. We need more transparency. Give us a reason to vote.
My big concern is the apathy of many will provide a back door for the Euro sceptics, fruitcakes, swivel eyed loons, closet racists and general Rednecks into some real power in the EU because moderates chose not to vote.
I’ve been that cynic. A quote, one I can’t remember who originally said it, went “If voting changed anything, it would be made illeagal.”
I believed that, sometimes I still do, but the referendum on Scottish Independence in September has brought back a belief in grassroots politics. The Dutch local elections where local parties did well and took votes away from the mainstream parties also caught my eye.
Your vote can make a difference. Even if it’s a spoiled paper.

And then there was this!
Ballot Box Selfies NOT Illegal, Say Dutch Court

Is this a ploy to get more people to vote?! Wouldn’t suprise me. Go on get your vote in and take a photie while you’re at it. Your big smiling face next to your ballot paper with the big Anarchy symbol you drew in with the wee red pencil they supplied you with. Who am I to stop you? But seriously though, make an informed decision. I have a feeling this years EU Election could be a big one and I’d hate to see the rising tide of Euro sceptics turn into a Redneck tsunami.

You could do worse than have a look at this link here.
